Important Information: Single Skin Oil Tanks

Single Skin Oil Tanks do not incorporate any form of secondary containment. Therefore in the event of a spillage, a pollution incident will result. Consideration therefore should always be given to installing a Bunded Oil Tank. Bunded oil storage tanks are proven to significantly reduce the likelihood of a pollution incident, with all the corresponding clean up costs and fines, in the event of an oil leak. Fitting a single skin fuel oil tank where a bunded tank is require is an offence.

Installation Requirements

All oil tanks must be installed, and all maintenance carried out by, an Oftec registered engineer in accordance with the supplied instructions, statutory requirements and the requirements of Oftec Technical Book 3. OFTEC and British Standard BS5410 require that all fuel and oil storage tanks should be installed upon a base of adequate strength that extends a minimum of 300mm beyond the maximum dimensions of the tank.

RPM Fuels & Tanks will not be responsible for oil tank installations which do not comply with these requirements and where a single skin oil tank has been installed where a bunded tank is a legal requirement.

Q. WHEN SHOULD A SINGLE SKIN OIL TANK NOT BE INSTALLED?

All Single Skin Oil Tanks are generally unsuitable for storage of oil at any domestic installation where the tank:
Is within 10 meters of a water source such as a river, lake, sea or when run off can reach this area.
Is within 50 meters of a well, borehole or spring, or when run off can reach this point.

A. Why does the tank base have to measure 300mm around the perimeter of the oil tank?

The fire protection provided by the base is to help prevent the tank itself from becoming overgrown and in turn to help protect against fire spreading across the ground to the contained fuel from another source. If the tank is raised on piers, the platform supporting the tank should be sized to sufficiently support the tank. Reference should be made to the tank manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Has a capacity of more than 2500 Litres.
Is located where spillage could run into an open drain or to a loose-fitting manhole cover.
Is located where the tank vent pipe outlets cannot be seen from the intended filling point.
Is located within a Zone 1 EA Groundwater Source Protection Zone

Q. What fuel types can be stored in Harlequin oil tanks?

A. Harlequin Oil Tanks are suitable only for the storage of:
Kerosene (C1/C2)
Agricultural Fuel Oil (A2)
Diesel (D)
Home Heating Oil
BioDiesel blends manufactured in accordance with the British Standard BS EN14214 / Irish Standard IS EN14214 (BioDiesel with a bio-element not exceeding 5% concentration)
When installing a Harlequin Oil Tank please ensure you follow the supplied instructions and it is installed in accordance with the requirements of the OFTEC Technical Instruction Book 3 and prevailing statutory requirements.
