Your Guide to Fuel Tank Security
Oil and diesel theft are major problems for homes and businesses across the UK. More than £2million worth of fuel was recorded as being stolen from commercial premises and domestic properties across the UK in 2015 - so it is vital to ensure your bunded fuel tank is properly secured.
This is what you can do to secure your commercial or domestic oil storage tanks and prevent yourself becoming a victim.
Positioning and Screening Your Tank
If fuel storage tanks can be seen from your house, this can put off potential criminals. There are also safety rules to consider about the distance between a tank and nearby buildings. OFTEC recommends that tanks should be 76cm away from wooden boundary fences and 60cm away from trellis and foliage which does not form part of a boundary.
Screening with a hedge is permitted, but these distances must be borne in mind. If you are considering planting a hedge, then police recommend hawthorn, holly or pyracantha, as the prickly leaves could put off potential thieves. Also, ripped clothing could help identify culprits. Another means of screening is to place the bunded fuel tank behind a shed or an outbuilding.
Locking Tanks, Gauges and Alarms
It is important that tanks are securely locked so that fuel cannot be siphoned off and in some cases, locking is a legal requirement. RPM supplies a range of fuel filler locking caps, and padlocks can also be used. However, after a tank is locked, don’t forget that drivers will need to have keys for deliveries if you’re not going to be there.
Another alternative means of securing tanks is to choose a fuel gauge which can be linked to an alarm. RPM can provide the Watchman & Apollo Ultrasonic Remote, or wireless, tank gauges which also incorporate a “Sudden Oil Loss Alarm”. This will sound an alarm inside the property should there be a sudden loss of oil due to theft or a leak.
The main domestic gauges to consider with these features are the Watchman Alarm and the Apollo Smart Heating Oil Monitor. On the commercial side, RPM sells the Piusi Ocio Oil Tank Level Indicator, which includes high and low level alarms.
We can also supply fill point locking caps plus locking vent caps for domestic and smaller commercial oil tanks.
Security Lighting and CCTV
Low-energy lights which stay on all night close to your tank could put off potential thieves, by meaning they can’t use the cover of darkness to enter your site. These lights will not cost you too much either. Another advantage of this type of light is that it isn’t too bright and won’t disturb your neighbours.
CCTV is now becoming more popular and less expensive than in the past, so it may be something else which businesses will want to consider. The investment could be worthwhile to protect your valuable oil.
